A rare, but highly-virulent and life-threatening tropical fungus is spreading throughout the US Pacific Northwest, having already killed twenty-five percent of those infected (though representing only five of twenty). The strain belongs to the cryptococcus gatti fungus, known to only infect transplant and AIDS patients and people with otherwise compromised immune systems. But the new, "mutated" strain threatens otherwise healthy people. Normally found only in Southeast Asia, Australia, and South America, it lives on the bark of trees, and is contracted by inhaling its airborne spores, causing coughing and breathing difficulties. Sony announces the end of the manufacture and sale of the Floppy Disk ... again; this time in Japan, as it has already done in most other markets, in favor of larger USB Flash Drives, Memory Cards, and Solid State Drives of 32, 64, 128 GB, and more. The 3.5" Floppy held only 1.4 MB, of course almost 1,000 times smaller than just a single GB on the newer media. The previous, larger 5.25" floppies, which actually were "floppy disks," held either only .36 MB or, later, 1.2 MB. An 8" version even existed before that. Apple was the first to choose not to include the drive on its iMac in 1998. Like everyone who is fleeing from the fascism of Microsoft products, some to the Macintosh others, like me, to Linux, particularly Linux Mint, it is not enough to replace just Windows. There are also a number of their applications as well. Opera is the best replacement for Internet Explorer and Outlook or Outlook Express. And for applications like the suite of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook), that dominate our desktops, it appeared that the Open Office suite from the big player Sun Microsystems would be an important contender. Here was a product that could replace the Microsoft suite, application by application. And they had versions for most platforms including Windows and Linux, it was half the size, and was even easy to turn into a portable application. And to cap it all off, it was even Open Source software and free! But unfortunately, the Open Office suite of applications from Sun Microsystems, version 3.x, is a dismal disappointment and a complete worthless piece of crap. Complete Article All Articles
